Value Score = ( Σ weightᵢ × normalize(specᵢ) ) ÷ √(price ÷ category-average price)
  • Each spec is scored relative to the other products in the category — the weakest model on that spec sits at the bottom, the strongest at the top, everyone else in between. So a score means "how this model compares to its competitors," not an absolute grade. (This also lets us fairly combine specs on totally different scales — a rating in the hundreds, a cost in dollars, a yes/no feature.)
  • weightᵢ = your slider values. A situation chip just presets them (e.g. "well water" cranks contaminant scope + micron). Override any time.
  • Dividing by the square root of price-relative-to-average turns raw capability into value — a great-but-overpriced system ranks below a good one at the average price. We use the square root deliberately: a straight price divide lets a rock-bottom single-cartridge housing multiply itself to the top on price alone, which isn't real value. Sqrt-dampening still rewards paying less for equal capability, without letting the cheapest sticker win by default.
  • Contaminant scope is a 0–3 capability tier (sediment only → +chlorine/carbon → +heavy metals/VOC → +well-water iron/sulfur). Micron rating is scored inverted — a lower micron (finer sediment filtration) ranks higher. A point-of-entry (POE) filter sits where the water main enters your house, so every tap, shower and appliance gets treated water. That's the appeal — and the constraint. Because it filters everything, the specs that matter most aren't glamorous: can it deliver enough flow for two showers and a dishwasher at once, how long before you have to change or backwash the media, what does it actually remove, and is that removal claim independently certified or just marketing. Service flow rate is the spec that quietly ruins showers

Every filter advertises a flow number, but the one that matters is continuous service flow in GPM — the sustained rate the system can deliver without a pressure drop. Undersize it and you get the classic complaint: someone flushes a toilet and your shower goes cold-and-weak. A typical family home wants roughly 7–15 GPM depending on bathroom count and simultaneous use. Big-blue cartridge systems and Max-Flow tank designs push 14–15 GPM; compact carbon tanks and UV-paired well systems often sit at 7–11. We weight flow highest because it's the failure mode you'll actually notice every day.

Capacity and service interval = the real cost of ownership

Two systems can cost the same up front and be wildly different to live with. A tank-based catalytic-carbon system rated at "1,000,000 gallons" runs 5–10 years on one media bed — you basically forget it exists. A big-blue cartridge system is cheaper to buy but you're swapping filters every 3–12 months, and those cartridges add up. Contaminant scope: sediment is not the same as "clean"

This is where marketing gets slippery. A basic sediment filter makes water look clearer but does nothing for chlorine taste, lead, or well-water iron. We score contaminant scope as a 0–3 capability tier: sediment-only → sediment + chlorine/carbon (taste & smell) → + heavy metals/VOCs (KDF, catalytic carbon) → + well-water iron/sulfur/UV. Match the tier to your water: city water usually needs chlorine + optional lead/PFAS; well water needs iron/sediment and often disinfection. A system that removes more isn't automatically "better" for you if you don't have those contaminants — which is exactly why we don't crown one winner.

"NSF certified" — the claim you have to read carefully

This category is full of a specific sleight-of-hand: brands say their system is "tested to NSF/ANSI 42" or uses "NSF-certified media." That is not the same as the assembled system carrying a third-party certification. We checked every model against NSF's own certified-products database — and most of the big carbon-tank brands (Aquasana Rhino, Pelican/Pentair, SpringWell CF1) returned no matching product. Their media components are NSF-listed; the finished system is tested-to, not certified. "Best whole-house water filter" depends entirely on whether you're on city or well water, how many bathrooms run at once, whether you'll actually change cartridges, and your budget. A high-flow big-blue cartridge is perfect for a city home that wants chlorine removal cheaply, and wrong for a well owner fighting iron.
