Value Score = ( Σ weightᵢ × normalize(specᵢ) ) ÷ (price ÷ category-average price)
  • Each spec is scored relative to the other products in the category — the weakest model on that spec sits at the bottom, the strongest at the top, everyone else in between. So a score means "how this model compares to its competitors," not an absolute grade. (This also lets us fairly combine specs on totally different scales — a rating in the hundreds, a cost in dollars, a yes/no feature.)
  • weightᵢ = your slider values. A situation chip just presets them (e.g. "wet basement" cranks capacity + coverage). Override any time.
  • Dividing by price-relative-to-average turns raw capability into value — a great-but-overpriced unit ranks below a good one at the average price.
  • Noise is scored inverted — quieter (lower dBA) ranks higher. Capacity is the DOE 2019 pint rating (the modern test; a "50-pint" under the old pre-2019 test is only ~30–35 pints now). The pint number on the box isn't what you think it is

Here's the trap that trips up almost every dehumidifier buyer: the DOE changed the test in 2019, and it made the pint numbers drop. A unit that was rated "70-pint" under the old test is only about a 50-pint under the current one — same machine, smaller number. Manufacturers still market the old-style capacities in places, so you'll see the identical box called both. This tool uses the current DOE 2019 pint rating for every unit, so you're comparing apples to apples. Bigger pints/day = pulls more water and refills/drains less often; match it to how wet the space actually is, not to the biggest number you can find.

Tank vs. continuous drain vs. built-in pump

Every dehumidifier can drain three ways, and it changes how much you babysit it. Tank: it collects water in a bucket you empty by hand — fine for a bedroom, miserable for a wet basement (you'll empty a 50-pint unit two-plus times a day). Gravity drain: attach a hose and let it run downhill to a floor drain — free, but only works if there's a lower drain nearby. Built-in pump: the unit pumps condensate upward and out — into a sink, up a window, across a basement — so it can run continuously anywhere, hands-off. That's why the "set-and-forget" preset weights the pump heavily: on a real humidity problem, the pump is the difference between a set-it-once appliance and a daily chore. Why energy factor (IEF) matters more than you'd guess

A dehumidifier that runs in a damp basement can pull power around the clock for months. The ENERGY STAR Integrated Energy Factor (IEF, in liters removed per kWh) is the honest efficiency number, and the spread here is real: from ~1.7 up to 2.20 on the ENERGY STAR "Most Efficient" Waykar. That gap compounds over a season of continuous running into a meaningful chunk of your electric bill — which is exactly why "lowest running cost" leans on it. If the unit is going to run hard, efficiency isn't a nicety, it's the running cost.

Sizing: pints vs. coverage

Capacity (pints/day) is how much water it can remove; coverage (sq ft) is the manufacturer's rated area. They're related but not the same — a big pint rating in a huge open basement can still struggle if the space exceeds its coverage, and an oversized unit in a small damp room just short-cycles. Rough guide: a moderately damp space up to ~1,500 sq ft is fine on a small unit; a wet basement or a whole floor wants a 50-pint (DOE) unit rated for 3,000–5,000 sq ft. Match both numbers to your space, then let the value math sort the rest.

Why we don't just name a winner

"Best dehumidifier" depends entirely on the room and what you're optimizing. A flooded basement wants max capacity + a pump and doesn't care about noise; a bedroom wants the quietest unit at a modest capacity; the bill-watcher wants the highest IEF.
