Value Score = ( Σ weightᵢ × normalize(specᵢ) ) ÷ (price ÷ category-average price)
  • Each spec is scored relative to the other products in the category — the weakest model on that spec sits at the bottom, the strongest at the top, everyone else in between. So a score means "how this model compares to its competitors," not an absolute grade. (This also lets us fairly combine specs on totally different scales — a rating in the hundreds, a cost in dollars, a yes/no feature.)
  • weightᵢ = your slider values. A situation chip just presets them (e.g. "lattes" cranks steam power). Override any time.
  • Dividing by price-relative-to-average turns raw capability into value — a great-but-overpriced flagship ranks below a good one at the average price.
  • Boiler, steam, build, machine-type are 0–3 capability tiers (e.g. boiler: single → thermoblock → heat-exchanger → dual boiler). Footprint is scored inverted — a narrower machine ranks higher. First decide how much you want to do — that's the whole game

Espresso machines split on one question before any spec matters: do you want to make espresso, or do you want espresso made for you? A super-automatic (bean-to-cup, like the De'Longhi Magnifica or Jura E8) grinds, doses, tamps, brews and froths at a button press — walk-up convenience, no skill, no mess, but you give up control over the shot and you're trusting one sealed appliance. A semi-automatic (Gaggia Classic, Breville Barista, Rancilio Silvia, Lelit) makes you the barista — grind, dose, tamp, steam by hand — which is more work but more control, better ceiling, and usually far more machine-per-dollar. A manual lever (Flair 58) is the purist extreme: no pump, no electronics, you press the shot by arm. That's why "machine type" here is a capability axis, not a "higher is better" one — the tool lets you weight it up (for convenience) or down (for control) depending on which camp you're in.

Boiler type is the spec that separates toys from tools

This is the one enthusiasts obsess over, and for good reason — it governs temperature stability and whether you can brew and steam at once. Single boiler (Gaggia Classic): one heater, you wait and switch between brewing and steaming — fine, just slower. Thermoblock/thermocoil (most Brevilles, super-autos): heats water on demand, fast to ready, but less thermally stable under load. Heat exchanger / HX (Lelit MaraX): pulls brew water through a steam boiler so you can brew and steam simultaneously — the prosumer sweet spot. Dual boiler (Breville BES920, Oracle Jet): two separate boilers, independent brew and steam temps, rock-solid — the gold standard, and the priciest. We score it 0–3 in that order; weight it hard if you care about back-to-back milk drinks or dialed-in shot temps.

PID, steam power, and why they punch above their price

PID is digital temperature control — it holds the brew water within a degree or two instead of letting a basic thermostat swing. On espresso, a couple degrees is the difference between sour and sweet, so PID is one of the highest-value features a machine can have; the Gaggia Classic famously gets modded for it, while machines like the Breville Barista line build it in. Steam power decides your milk: a weak panarello wand (many super-autos, budget machines) makes warm bubbly milk; a proper commercial-style multi-hole wand (Rancilio Silvia, Lelit, Breville Dual Boiler) makes the glossy microfoam latte art needs. If milk drinks are your thing, weight steam — it's often where cheaper "espresso" machines quietly fall down.

Build quality and footprint: the quiet value factors

Build (0–3, plastic → full metal/commercial group) tracks how long the machine lasts and how it holds temperature — a brass E61 group (Lelit, Profitec) is a different universe from a plastic-bodied super-auto, and it's a big reason prosumer semi-autos win "buy-it-for-life." Footprint matters more than people admit: some of these are genuinely large (15" wide), and a narrow machine like the Profitec Go (5.7") or Bambino (7.7") can be the difference between fitting your counter or not — so we score width inverted, smaller-is-better, and let you weight it if space is tight.
