Value Score = ( Σ weightᵢ × normalize(specᵢ) ) ÷ (price ÷ category-average price)

The number that matters most depends on your water — and whether you even want salt

First fork: salt-based softener vs salt-free conditioner. A salt-based ion-exchange softener actually removes calcium and magnesium — you get the slick feel, spot-free glasses, better lather, and no scale. A salt-free "conditioner" (template-assisted crystallization or an electronic descaler) doesn't remove hardness at all; it just alters the minerals so they're less likely to stick, cutting new scale without softening the water. Salt vs salt-free vs reverse osmosis vs a whole-house filter

These get cross-shopped constantly, so: a softener fixes hardness (scale, spots, dry skin). A whole-house filter fixes taste/chlorine/sediment/PFAS — a different job; many homes run a filter and a softener in series. Grain capacity = hardness the resin holds between regenerations (salt-free = N/A). Service flow rate = sustained soft-water GPM without pressure drop. Salt efficiency = grains removed per lb of salt at the efficient dose; higher = cheaper to run (salt-free = N/A, uses no salt). Warranty = longest headline tank/valve warranty (lifetime shown as a high value). Metered (demand) regen = regenerates on actual water used, not a fixed timer — saves salt and water (salt-free never regenerates, so it's counted as never-wasting by design). NSF/ANSI 44 certified = the assembled unit carries a third-party softening-performance listing (component-only NSF listings don't count; salt-free can't earn this standard).
