Value Score = ( Σ weightᵢ × normalize(specᵢ) ) ÷ (price ÷ category-average price)
  • Each spec is scored relative to the other products in the category — the weakest model on that spec sits at the bottom, the strongest at the top, everyone else in between. So a score means "how this model compares to its competitors," not an absolute grade. (This also lets us fairly combine specs on totally different scales — a rating in the hundreds, a cost in dollars, a yes/no feature.)

How to actually size a water heater — first-hour rating beats "gallons"

The number on the box — "50 gallon" — is not how much hot water the unit delivers in a busy morning. The spec that matters is the First-Hour Rating (FHR): the gallons of hot water the heater can supply in one hour starting with a full tank. A 50-gallon tank with a fast burner or a hybrid's boosted recovery can post a first-hour rating of 65–75 gallons, while a slow electric 50-gallon barely clears 55. That's why the tool weights first-hour rating hardest by default — it's the honest answer to "will we run out of hot water?" Match FHR to your household's peak demand (a family of 4 wants roughly 60–70+ gallons FHR for stacked morning showers) and the rest is efficiency and price.

The four fuel types, and why the choice comes first

Heat-pump / hybrid (Rheem ProTerra, A.O. Smith Voltex) move heat from the air into the water instead of generating it, hitting UEFs of 3.5–4.2 — three to four times the efficiency of plain electric. They cost the most up front ($1,500–2,200) and need a warm, roomy space (they cool and dehumidify the area), but they slash the operating bill and often qualify for utility rebates and tax credits. Condensing gas (UEF ~0.88) squeezes extra heat from exhaust and recovers fast — great for big households on natural gas. Standard atmospheric gas (UEF ~0.60) is cheap and simple but wastes more heat up the flue. Electric resistance (UEF ~0.90) is the cheapest to buy and install (no venting, no gas line) but the priciest to run per gallon where electricity is dear. We keep fuel type as a filter, not a scored column, because your home dictates it — you compare within what your house can actually take.

UEF, recovery and warranty: the specs that decide value

UEF (Uniform Energy Factor) is the DOE's standardized efficiency rating — higher means more of the energy reaches the water and less is wasted, directly setting your monthly bill. Recovery rate (gallons per hour the unit can reheat at a given temperature rise) is what keeps hot water coming during a long demand stretch — high recovery is why a gas or hybrid unit outperforms a same-size electric on back-to-back showers. Warranty (tank years) is a real durability signal: premium units carry 10–12 year tank warranties, budget units 6. The tool scores all three and normalizes to price, so a hybrid that costs more up front but delivers huge FHR, top UEF and a long warranty can still win on value — or lose it, if your priority is simply the lowest sticker price.

Why we don't just name a single winner

The "best water heater" for a gas-plumbed family of five is the wrong unit for a solo renter on electric in a small closet. Fuel availability, household size, install space and how much you weight up-front cost versus lifetime running cost all move the answer. One name buries that. 1st-Hr (gal) = first-hour rating, real hot water delivered in the first hour from full (the sizing number). UEF = DOE efficiency (higher = lower bills; hybrids 3.5–4.2, condensing gas ~0.88, electric ~0.90, atmospheric gas ~0.60). Tank (gal) = nominal storage. Recovery (gph) = gallons reheated per hour.
