How to think about sizing for 4 people
The number that actually matters is flow at your real temperature rise, not the big "up to 11 GPM" marketing figure. In a cold climate (incoming water near 40°F, target 110°F = a 70°F rise) a unit's usable flow can be half its headline spec. That's why the tool defaults to weighting Flow @ 70° rise heavily for this page — but if you're in a warm-water region, slide that down and watch the ranking shift.
Why we don't just name a winner
A "best pick" is only "best" for one set of priorities. A family that showers back-to-back cares about flow; a family watching gas bills cares about UEF; a landlord cares about warranty. Handing you one name buries that trade-off. The Value Score keeps it in your hands — which is the whole point of this site, and why the formula is printed above instead of hidden.
The specs, briefly
UEF = how much energy reaches your water (higher = lower bills). Flow @ 70° rise = real simultaneous-shower capacity in cold weather. Min-flow = how little flow it takes to fire (low = no "cold-water sandwich"). Heat-exchanger warranty = the part that fails; longer = more confidence. Recirculation = instant hot water at the tap.
